Banlist philosophy

Format health

Cards are judged on their impact on format diversity, game speed and interactive gameplay.

Regular updates

The banlist is reviewed every 2 months, with emergency updates possible for format-warping cards.

Community input

Tournament data and community feedback are essential parts of every banlist decision.

Experimental changes

Cards may be unbanned for a testing period so their current power level can be measured.

Fast mana restriction

Fast mana accelerants such as Sol Ring, Mana Crypt and Mana Vault create unacceptable variance in competitive 1v1 play.

They let a player deploy threats two or three turns ahead of schedule, producing non-games where the opponent never had a realistic chance to compete. In a 20-life format that acceleration is particularly devastating.

Checking card legality

  • Check this official banlist page, or use the legality checker at the top.
  • Make sure the card is legal in Vintage, which excludes silver-bordered, acorn-stamped and oversized cards.
  • Verify the card fits your commander’s colour identity.
  • Remember: only one copy of each card, except basic lands.
